Recently I was asked to take pictures at a very good friends birthday party, I was a little unsure at first as I was concerned about taking my camera into an environment when let’s be honest a vast amount of alcohol was potentially going to be consumed!  However I knew my friend would appreciate the effort and it was a great chance for me to learn and gain valuable experience so I jumped at the opportunity.

Then I asked myself how do I engage with this type of event, it's not a wedding where everyone is primed and expectant of the photographer and neither is it a casual affair where people are relaxed and tend to go with the flow a little more.  I decided that I would take a prop with me and introduce it to the crowd after the ice had been broken, so I took and empty picture frame roughly 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet.

The idea was simple but incredibly effective, everyone wanted to get in the frame and at one point were literally queuing up to be in the shot, this made my job easy and was so much fun I cannot tell you, so next time you’re going to a big party try it out and I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
