ISO is the third element to consider when taking pictures, the ISO setting allows you to control how quickly the camera will react to light or the light sensitivity when a photograph is taken.

Most cameras range between 100 and 6400, the lower numbers means slower the camera reacts or less sensitive.  The rule of thumb I have always used is to use the lowest ISO possible for the situation by adjusting the aperture and shutter speed before I change the ISO from a low setting.

Setting a high ISO can be very beneficial in low light conditions or for compensating for a fast shutter speed and small aperture combination shots.
